Week 3 Notes, Homework, and Video
NEW NOTES:
NOTE 1: WORK WITH DISTRACTIONS LIKE YOUTUBE AUDIO RECORDINGS, DIFFERENT STANDING OR SITTING BY HANDLERS OR HELPERS FOR ANY DISTRACTION HELPER, MOVING FURNITURE AROUND, AND SO ON.
DOOR OPENING AND CLOSING AUDIO
NOTE 2: DROP THE LEASH FOR THE CIRCLE SIT STAY EXERCISES, CIRCLE PLACE EXERCISES, AND LONG PLACE.
NOTE 3: IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE STAY EXERCISES AND DISTRACTIONS, YOU CAN REDUCE THE TIME OR CIRCLE WIDTH AND THEN BUILD IT UP AGAIN.
NOTE 4: INCREASE THE CIRCLE WIDTH FOR CIRCLE SIT STAYS AND CIRCLE PLACE (WITH LEASH DROPPED OR ON LONG LINE). THESE ARE FOR INSIDE NOW AND ON A 6' LEASH.
NOTE 5: I HAVE INCLUDED AN ARTICLE ON HOW TO ADVANCE TRAINING. IT CAN AND PROBABLY SHOULD FEEL BORING WHEN YOU ARE WORKING ON THAT. ALSO, THERE IS NO RUSH FOR OUTSIDE DISTRACTIONS. I WOULD RATHER HAVE YOUR DOG FAMILIAR WITH INSIDE DISTRACTIONS IN YOUR HOME ENVIRONMENT. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THE QUALITY OF YOUR DOG'S PERFORMANCE BEFORE PUTTING EXTRA DISTRACTIONS IN PLACE.
NOTE 6: FOR OBEDIENCE NEW EXERCISES, KEEP THEM DISTRACTION-FREE AND INSIDE. ONCE THE GOALS ARE BEING MET, EASILY START WITH EASY DISTRACTIONS AND WORK YOUR WAY UP. SO HEELING, SITS, SIT STAYS, SEND TO PLACE, AND CIRCLE PLACE CAN ALL START THE DISTRACTIONS. WHILE PLAY TRAINING FOR ENGAGEMENT AND LURED HEELING STEP 1 SHOULD BE STARTED INSIDE IN AS LOW DISTRACTIONS AS POSSIBLE. THEN YOU CAN BUILD UP THE DISTRACTIONS AS LISTED ON THE OTHER EXERCISES.
Homework Schedule:
Calming Exercises (NOTE: ROTATE "SIT ON THE DOG" AND "LONG PLACE" ON ALTERNATE DAYS):
- (CHANGE) Sit on the Dog 30 + minutes Goal: To get your dog to lay down on their own steam in five minutes or under with planned distractions. Distractions can be toys on the floor, food bowl on the floor, audio distractions (above), and doing this outside starting with your yard in the spring or summer.
- (CHANGE) Long Place 30 minutes Goal: To get your dog used to staying on their place for 30 minutes and now changing up the distractions. Distractions can be toys on the floor, food bowl on the floor, audio distractions (above), staying while you do chores (do not go out of the eyeline), and doing this outside starting with your yard in the spring or summer.
- (NEW) Lured Heel Step 1 5-10 minutes Goal: To get three sessions of 4 patterns (heel and sit) in a row. Note: Before the auto sit, you should have your dog in a good position before closing up your feet. The reason the dog's head is in front of my legs is so they can see my body language that tells them I am stopping. LURED HEEL STEP 2 IS INCLUDED FOR YOU, BUT MEL IS NOT READY FOR THAT YET. PRACTICE STEP 1 UNTIL IT FEELS SILLY TO.
- (CHANGED) Circle Sit Stays 10 minutes or less Goal: To eventually get four in a row sit stays for 1 minute. Week 3 Change: Drop leash and widen circle inside dragging 6' leash.
- (CHANGED) Sit Stays with Random Distractions 7 minutes or less Goal: To be able to eventually get 3 sets of 4 in a row and increase the distraction inside. Week 3 Change: Rotate different distractions. Distractions can be toys on the floor, food bowl on the floor, audio distractions (above), and doing this outside, starting with your yard, eventually on a 15" Long Line. You don't need to rush that to the outside or very challenging inside (petco, home depot, et) distractions on a 6' leash. If you started on outside distractions in the spring after advancing this work, that would be fine.
- (CHANGED) Send to Place 7 minutes or less Goal: To get your dog to step on themselves for times in a row for 3 sets. NOTE: THE VIDEO IS NOT OF MEL. I ONLY HAD TIME TO PRACTICE SIT STAY RANDOM DISTRACTIONS. THIS VIDEO IS SOMEWHAT WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE WITH AUDIO DISTRACTIONS.
- (CHANGED) Circle Place 10 minutes or less Goal: To eventually get 4 in a row without needing correction for 1 minute or 5 minute. Week 3 Change: Rotate different distractions. Distractions can be toys on the floor, food bowl on the floor, audio distractions (above), and doing this outside, eventually on a 15" Long Line. You don't need to rush that to the outside or very challenging inside (petco, home depot, et) distractions on a 6' leash. If you started on outside distractions in the spring after advancing this work, that would be fine. NOTE: THE VIDEO IS NOT OF MEL. I ONLY HAD TIME TO PRACTICE SIT STAY RANDOM DISTRACTIONS. THIS VIDEO IS SOMEWHAT WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE WITH AUDIO DISTRACTIONS.
- Play and Engagement Sits wo Jumping 10 minutes or less Goal: To get your dog practicing their obedience commands with the ball and long line. You can also just play with fetch to you as the goal. Eventually, you will want to move this pay training outside. NOTE: TRYING PLAY TRAINING CLOSE TO CHALLENGING DOGS IS NOT GOOD. THIS IS BECAUSE THEY ARE GETTING FIRED UP PLAYING, AND THEN WILL USE THAT ENERGY TO TRY TO GET TO THE OTHER DOG. IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO DO THIS, SO YOUR DOG GETS TO FEELING SAFE.
